Wild Shores Book PDF Summary
A disused quarry. A suspicious death. A dark past bubbling to the surface . . .
Though Detective Karen Eiken Hornby returned to her homeland, the island nation Doggerland, from London some years ago, she has largely avoided visiting the northernmost island where her father’s wayward family reside.
But when a man’s body is discovered in a flooded quarry on Noorö and with illness preventing any of her colleagues attending, Karen has no choice but to head north to investigate.
However, with limited resources at her disposal Karen is largely on her own – and she cannot shake the feeling that her relatives, with their somewhat lax approach to the rule of law, could be involved .
Karen Eiken Hornby is back, recovering from the traumatic climax of the first novel in this series, Fatal Isles. But her Christmas leave is interrupted by a murder investigation, taking her to a remote area of the fictional Doggerland islands, somewhere between the UK and Denmark, an area she knows well from childhood.
An elderly man has been found dead in a quarry and the probe into what happened to him uncovers some dark secrets in a tight-knit community. The centre of the action, or one of the centres, is the local distillery. And there’s a gang of criminal bikers, with an uncomfortable connection to Karen’s family.
Meanwhile, one of Karen’s friends is the victim of horrendous domestic abuse, providing a parallel plot. Both storylines share common ground – women pushed to the limits of their resourcefulness. Karen’s tragic back story is also fleshed out here – indeed, these are among the best passages in the novel.
Without the domestic abuse element, and her back story, Wild Shores would be in danger of being a little formulaic. Early on, I found the sheer number of characters and their familial links pretty baffling, but soon figured out what was needed to understand, and enjoy, the novel.
The climax is exciting and deftly done, but arguably predictable. It’s a combination of Doggerland, its cuisine and rituals, Karen’s story, and the large cast of supporting characters, that makes it work. There are a few irritating typos towards the end. But overall it’s a compelling thriller and I can’t wait to read the next instalment.
