Small Town Big Magic PDF Summary

Emerson Wilde has built the life of her dreams. Youngest Chamber of Commerce president in St. Cyprian history, successful indie bookstore owner, and lucky enough to have her best friends as found family? Done.

But when Emerson is attacked by creatures that shouldn’t be real, and kills them with what can only be called magic, Emerson finds that the past decade of her life has been…a lie. St. Cyprian isn’t your average Midwestern river town—it’s a haven for witches. When Emerson failed a power test years ago, she was stripped of her magical memories. Turns out, Emerson’s friends are all witches.

And so is she.

That’s not all, though: evil is lurking in the charming streets of St. Cyprian. Emerson will need to learn to control what’s inside of her, remember her magic, and deal with old, complicated feelings for her childhood friend–cranky-yet-gorgeous local farmer Jacob North—to defeat an enemy that hides in the rivers and shadows of everything she loves.

Even before she had magic, Emerson would have done anything for St. Cyprian, but now she’ll have to risk not just her livelihood…but her life.

I’m pretty sure most authors’ alternative career plans were/are to be indie bookstore owners. That’s purely anecdotal, but how many books have you read where at least one of the characters owns or works in a bookstore?

But don’t get me wrong- cause girl, SAME. And that’s exactly what our MC in Small Town, Big Magic, Emerson Wilde, does. She runs the bookstore in St. Cyprian. It’s the same one her grandmother started.

Emerson is decidedly practical and does not believe in magic or similar nonsense. She takes her role as business owner and chamber of commerce president very seriously, working diligently to bring new businesses and more potential customers to her town.

Her latest project, the town’s Redbud Festival, is coming along swimmingly. She just has to get the mayor, and her lifelong nemesis, on board with some of the changes. When she gets an early morning call from him to check on the highlighted Redbud trees, she knows it can’t be good.

She crosses the river only to find the trees hacked apart and to be sent upon by creatures that can’t possibly be real. Suddenly, her friend Jacob comes out of nowhere wielding a sword of light! He’s fighting off the creatures but they just keep coming. As one goes to lunge at her while Jacob is distracted by another, she shouts for them to die and they do. Just like magic.

And that’s how Emerson finds out not only does she have magic, but so do all her friends. Now they just have to figure out what is throwing off the balance of good and evil, and try to keep Emerson’s magic hidden from the rest of the witches in town. And just maybe there’s a little more to her relationship with Jacob too.

This book is so well written and immersive in its storytelling. The characters are very well developed and each have their own distinct personality. And the friends-to-lovers relationship between Emerson and Jacob is so sweet.

“Witches aren’t excitable humans,” Ellowyn says. “We don’t ban books. We do put curses on them and smite our enemies out of existence, along with their books, but banning? That’s for the magicless. And dull.”

Emerson Wilde built the perfect life in the perfect town But when she’s attacked by creatures no one’s ever seen before she realizes her whole life has been a lie.

St. Cyprian is a town full of witches and ten years ago, Emerson failed a test and was deemed “spell dim.” Then her memories were stripped. Now, Emerson must struggle to regain what she’s lost and fight a power that intends to destroy St. Cyprian.

What I’m about to type shouldn’t be construed to be about the above quote which is one of my favorite paragraphs in the book and, incidentally, not said by the main character (which is telling).

Girl, get off your soapbox! I consider myself a feminist and I’m fine at having a shout-out to feminism in my fiction, but Hazel-Beck took it a bit too far in this novel that I really, really wanted to love.

What started out as cute and quirky became obnoxious several hundred pages in (or maybe sooner). I loved the idea of a magical town with witchy history but…Emerson got on my last nerve.

Everything was all about her, to the extent that the other characters fell flat…even the enemy. I’m sad but will continue to search for a good, witchy book.
