Sankofa by Chibundu Onuzo PDF Summary
Anna Bain was her single mother’s only kid. Anna is black in every sense of the word in the United States. Anna’s mother is white and had an affair in college with a black student from a small African nation.
After the man left, Anna’s mother discovered she was pregnant. Anna believes her mother did a poor job of parenting her since she is black. Her mother did not believe that race should have a role in Anna’s personal development.
Anna never felt like she had discovered her people or her tribe. Whites recognized her as black, but blacks recognized her as mixed.
Anna is looking through her mother’s belongings when she comes upon her biological father’s diary. Her mother has never told her anything about him, so she is curious. She chooses to visit the fictitious African nation after reading his journal entries in order to meet him.
The book takes up as she reaches in Bamana. As Anna reflects on her life, we discover more about her. She’s white and an outcast in Bamana. She is still self-conscious about her multiracial identity.
She makes an effort to find more about her biological father. Onuzo does an excellent job of illustrating the contrasting sentiments, problems, and ideas of multiracial persons via Anna’s observations.
Anna’s inner progress is the most interesting aspect of the narrative. Yes, we have the ability to modify and better ourselves.
