Asterix or The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois, IPA: [aste?iks l? olwa]) is a French comic book series created by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). On October 29, 1959, the series debuted in French in the journal Pilote. There have been 34 comic books published in the series as of 2009.

The series follows the exploits of a community of ancient Gauls as they fight to keep their land from being conquered by the Romans. They do so using a druidic-brewed magic elixir that grants the recipient superhuman strength. Asterix, the titular character, and his sidekick Obelix go on different adventures. Both names end in “ix,” which is a reference to Vercingetorix, a historical Gaul chieftain. The stories frequently take them to other nations throughout the world, however, some are centered in and around their town. Setting in Gaul and overseas alternated for much of the series’ history (Volumes 4 through 29), with even-numbered volumes set abroad and odd-numbered volumes set in Gaul, primarily in the hamlet.
